‘Birds and the bees’

At university you are bound to meet many people from various backgrounds all of whom have had different experiences. Some people will not yet have had sex but others will claim to be experts on it !
You should never feel pressured to have sex; no one can force you no matter who they are. It is entirely your decision.
Embarking on a sex life brings with it certain responsibilities
Safe sex is always better and ultimately safer. Diseases associated with sex - STDs - can be serious and not all of them can be cured.

Contraception

There are many methods of contraception and the best thing is that they are all free. If you go to your GP, family planning clinic or GUM clinic they will advise you on the best method for you based on your circumstances.

"I met this really fit guy at a party the other night. We had a few drinks and then he took me back to his. Well, one thing led to another and we had sex. The only thing is, we didn't use a condom. We thought we'd be OK. I'm on the pill but I'm worried. I've no idea who else he's slept with. Could I have caught something?"
To be faced with a situation like this is not uncommon, so don't worry. What matters is getting yourself checked out to make sure you haven't caught a sexually transmitted disease (STD). you can catch STDs if you have unprotected sex with an infected partner. If you think you might be at risk it is best to see your GP, but if you don't feel comfortable with this you can also visit a doctor at your local family planning clinic or GUM clinic. If you are worried get the problem checked out. Don't ignore it. Don't let embarrassment stop you.
